What the Heck is Oil Pulling and Will it Pull Toxins from the Body?

O.K. this health practice seems a little strange at the outset. But many of its adherents make extravagant claims for it.

A Ukrainian physician, Dr F. Karach, presented what he called a remarkable treatment at a conference of the all Ukranische-Union of the Oncologists (specialists for tumor diseases) and Bacteriologists, a part of the Academy of Sciences of UDSSR. His talk involved a super simple healing process for the human body which he called Oil Pulling and which he said involved sunflower oil.

Per Dr. Karach the results are astonishing and thus fraught with skepticism, but by experimenting with the oil therapy everybody can see the results in his own body and become convinced.

It is more than surprising that with this totally harmless biological healing method one could achieve such success and healting results. It is hard to find anything to compare to it, says Dr. Karach, and he says further that most illnesses could be cured by this simple method without resorting to surgeries and prescription drugs. Dr. Karach even says it effects the duration of life with current man living only half of the time he could live. With this technique he could become 140 or 150 years old the Dr. says.

So how do you do it?: O.K. here it is:

In the morning before breakfast on an empty stomach you take one tablespoon in the mouth but do not swallow it. Move Oil Slowly in the mouth as rinsing or swishing and Dr Karach puts it as ' sip, suck and pull through the teeth' for fifteen to twenty minutes. This process makes the oil to be thoroughly mixed with saliva. Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood. The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic. As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white. If the oil is still yellow, it has not been pulled long enough. It is then spit from the mouth , the oral cavity must be thoroughly rinsed and mouth must be washed thoroughly. Just use normal tap water or any mouth wash.

This has in effect pulled toxins and poisons out through the mucous membranes of the mouth to be expelled down the drain.

It is important to understand that during the oil-pulling/swishing process one's metabolism is intensified. This leads to improved health. One of the most striking results of this process is the fastening of loose teeth, the elimination of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of the teeth.

The oil pulling /swishing is done best before breakfast. To accelerate the healing process, it can be repeated three times a day, but always before meals on an empty stomach.

Do not swallow. The oil should be spat out. But inadvertently if you swallow there is nothing to worry. It will go out through normal digestive process with no harm. Nothing is to be done.

If you are allergic to a particular brand of oil, change the brand of oil or oil itself to different oil. Sunflower and Sesame oil have been found to be equally effective in curing diseases. Other oils were not found to be as good, but could be used, for example peanut oil. Do not use unrefined oils.

According to Dr. Kurich, that this treatment will achieve remarkable results with illnesses like migraine headaches, bronchitis, diseased teeth, arterio thrombosis, chronic blood disorders such as leukemia, arthritis and related illnesses, neuro physiological paralysis, eczema, gastro enteritis, peritonitis, heart disease, kidney disease, meningitis, and women’s hormonal disorders are completely eliminated from the organism. The benefit of Dr. Karach's method is that the oil therapy heals the whole body in perpetuity. In terminal diseases such as cancer, aids and chronic infections this treatment method has been shown to achieve astonishing results.

My own skeptical results in trying this technique are here provided. I found sunflower oil at a health food store. I couldn't find it in ordinary supermarkets like WalMart. When I wasn't expecting to talk for about 15 minutes I half filled a shot glass which is about two tablespoons full, dunked it my mouth and started the swishing (while doing something at the computer). It is thick at first and you slowly work on it, back and forth, front and back, and through the teeth. The viscosity at first gives your gums a real massage and you feel it is strengthening them against gum desease, and the thick oil cleans between the teeth and below the gum lines and for any small particals that the tooth brush will not go to. Getting toward 10 minutes the oil starts to thin, perhaps from the breakdown of salava and its warming, and this is when it is supposed to have pulled toxins from the indocrines and other glands through the blood stream. When it is very thin after about 15 minutes you spit it out into a washroom sink or the commode. It will be white. Then wash the mouth out to get rid of the residue white stuff and supposed toxins in the mouth. A side benefit is that the mouth doesn't get as dry while asleep. And I found some benefits right off such as sleeping better and waking more alert. One of the problems is that you tend to forget doing it or you put it off. I tend to think it might be helpful if nothing else by absorbing some healthful refined vegetable oil. I want to keep doing it and keep up with others doing it. The internet has some souces that will provide new findings on this technique. It is likely worth watching.

My oldest daughter has been oil pulling for about three months now. I hadn't seen her for a while so I stopped by her home just to chat. As I sat across the table from her I began to ask my self, "What is so different about Wendy?" At closer observation I saw that her skin and her hair looked so HEALTHY and youthful and she seemed to have an unusally possative outlook on life. (She has had some very stressful issues to deal with) I couldn't remain silent! I said "WENDY, WHAT are you doing different?" She smiled and asked me why I wanted to know? I told her I could see a difference in her skin and her hair immediately. and her teeth were nice and white (she smokes and drinks tea and coffee) ...... and, well, she seemed to be peaceful, almost joyful. She went and got her laptop computer and took me to Doctor K's web page. ......... WOW! I couldn't wait to find some oil to start pulling for myself!. I've just started on my second week. I have noticed that I am sleeping so much sounder and my energy level has greatly increased! I can also atest to an elevated mood change which I love! I am 68 years old and have been in good health most of my life. I have hearing loss and ringing in my ears. Also I expierience virtego. I hope to report an improvement .. .. I feel something wonderful from deep within me. I intend to continue as long as I see such posative results

Thanks for your comments. I myself felt the same benefits but have been lazy and not been doing this technique faithfully. It takes some discipline to do it just as with everything. I am going to try doing it once a day. I think it is best to do it between meals on a fairly empty stomach. But what if this would remove toxins from the body and would improve life expectancy to 150 years? I hope enough people try this for it to stimulate some large numbers doing it so enough users for testing will be available. What I recall is waking up clearer headed.

I read about oil pulling around two months ago and began doing this. It's amazing. Perfect in place of yukky tasing mouthwashes...lol Leaves the mouth clean and fresh for hours. I had been losing quite a bit of hair when brushing and this has stopped now. My hair much shinier and thicker. Just feel really good.

I do take nutrient dense supplements also and am a rep for a company that sells supplements, however, since beginning the oil pulling...I use coconut oil, have noticed even more differences in my overall well being.

My daughter is doing this with sunflower oil and really feels it's of benefit also.

Was happpy to see someone else posting about this!

To Janice: I would be interested in hearing how the ringing in the ears is going for you Janice. I am having the same thing, and I also have polycythemia vera (which contributes to ringing). I just read yesterday about this pulling and wonder if it will help me. Please feel free to write to me anyone who feels like sharing direct.

Does anyone know if oil pulling will take prescription medecine out of your system? If you are taking medicine for High blood pressure or thyroid, does this remove the medecine and adversely affect you?

I was diagnosised with sarcoidosis (lung desease with no known cure) in 1993. I have been on steroid (predisone) treatment 3 times over the last 15 years and antibiotics numerous time for infections of the lungs. I was always experiencing this heavy pressure in the chest area and it felt like my lungs were expanding. My doctor could not explain this phenom. I also developed and acne condition because of excess oil secreation.March 3, 2008 I felt like I was getting an infection again, and decide to once again surf the net for alternative medicine. I was directed to earthclinic and came across OP. I started OPing March 9th and I haven't felt this good in 15 years. The heaviness in my chest is gone and I am breathing better. My acne condition also cleared up. I have yeary x-rays in September to monitor my lung condition. I can't wait to see how my lung look this September. I am using sesame oil.....TJ in AZ

I have just started trying oil pulling using refined seasme oil. Brushing your mouth out after swishing with a small amount of Ivory bar soap on a soft brush should clean it up. The soap is tasteless with high pH. Spit used oil into paper cup, not sink. Spit out soap rinse into toilet, always spit into toilet not sink.

There's a new book out on oil pulling titled "Oil Pulling Therapy" by Dr. Bruce Fife. It contains a lot of interesting information about oil pulling and debunks a lot of myths. One of the fascinating features about the book is how he gives a sound scientific explaination as to how oil pulling works and backs it up with medical studies.

I discovered an abscess this past Sunday (9/14/08), I had used Coconut oil for other home remedies, including taking a spoonful a day for internal healing. Panikingly I tried anything I could think of, it was swelling rapidilly. I couldn’t find a dentist on Sunday, as I was frantically trying anything I could think of to reverse the swelling, I was praying for an answer just after rinsing with hot salt water. The coconut oil was in reach, I took a coconut oil Q-tip, gently dapped the blood-red area, immediately blood gently oozed down on my tooth. I felt relief immediately. So I took a mouthful of coconut oil, started searching on line for a natural cure for an abscess, and oil pulling came up, one of the recommended oil was coconut. I was amazed that I had stumbled on this, by the Grace of God! This abscess moved around by this morning I had another large swollen area that has now diminished. It would appear that I over did the oil pulling, since I have had oil in my mouth countless times during the day, but now the swelling is almost gone and my mouth feels healthier already. This is miraculous!

But where did the abscess go?

I have heard horror stories of people who had an abscess that was fatal.

Is there a danger of this poison staying in my system?

I really don’t think that would be possible, since the purpose of oil pulling is removing toxins from the body. Still I would like to hear back from you concerning this and the other benefits of oil pulling.

Thank you,

JoAnn

I had listened to a lecture some 15 years ago about OP, and even tried it for a few days and gave up. I was young and restless and wanted to see immediate results. But now I am older and more matured and patient and one day I saw this advertisement of Seaame oil in which they were talking about oil pulling. It immedietely led me to rediscover it in detail through the internet, and from that time i have been doing it regularly 3 times a day. It is now almost a month, I always had lots of acne, and i see it getting more, but i have been toldit must be because of hormones, and that there is no cure, other than just using some creams and gels whenever they come. I am also into home remidies and sometimes everything helps and sometimes nothing works. These pimples leave pigmentation marks on my face. Anyway since nothing seems to help I thought i wae not going to lose anything by doing this Op.

Another thing why I like doing it 3 times is that it keeps a check on what i eat too, for i can't keep eating anything all the time , for i have to maintain the 4 hours break after ecah meal, ie., Breakfast lunch and dinner, and i usually have dinner before 7.So I do once before breakfast, before lunch and before dinner. I don't think it has made any difference in the amount I eat ( for i just eat enough to feel full), but it has helped in my not being tempted to eat in between meals. So I think it is a great boon for people who want to lose weight for they become very diciplened and committed.

I am well aware of the the conditions getting agravated and I am willing to wait to see the results. I think one should not use any other oil other than what is prescribed, and i have always felt comfortable with sesame oil as it iis very much part of our life in Southern parts of india. It is a great oil, and of course sunflower oil tooo is good. i cant understand why people would go to the lengths of trying castor oil, coconut oil etc.

Well if I see any postive results i would definitely share with all of you. Bye and take care and don't stop OP, regularly.

I've been oil pulling for about two months. As many have reported, my teeth are whiter, my gums and tongue are a 'healthy' looking pink color. The nasty side effects I had from a steroid medication (prednisone) including acne, extreme joint pain :(, tiredness, thining hair and itching are 99.9% gone. I'm grateful!! As Rama mentioned above, since I oil pull 2-3 times a day, I don't eat between meals, I have a cup of herbal green tea or some other drink instead, and my last big meal at night is eaten before 8:00 p.m., so I've lost weight. People who haven't seen me for a while tell me how great I look and how beautiful my skin is(all because of the oil pulling)!

Oil pulling is an age old indian tradition - granny's home medicine. As a practioner of various of forms of paranormal healing, i took to oil pulling some days ago - the best indication i get is in my urine - crystal clear as water and no odour. Certainly this is flushing out the toxins in a better way and is a sure and easiest method to good health.

Happy oil pulling

My goal is to be down to 170lbs by June 1st of this year. I'm eating better lately, but what I've noticed is that when I OP every morning, my body just feels good and it wants healthy foods. When I ran out of oil, I felt I needed to work harder at eating better.

The second thing I've noticed after a few DAYS of OP, is that my teeth are whiter.

I'm writing this to let you know that I just bought I new bottle of Sesame oil today and it will last me exactly 32 days, as I will OP once daily upon waking up.

At the end of that time, I will report my experience you. Until next time...

Hi, I tried OP for 2 weeks and my gum disease is gone, 2 of my teeth got infected and usually have mucus, but they are healed now. My indurance lasts longer, I sleep so well and my skin looks much better, before I usually looked so pale because of my ovarial cancer which already spread in the blood flow.

Thank God for showing me this way of natural treatment. I always suspect the chemical drugs, so I really appreciate those who spread this OP around especially to help those who don't have money and health insurance, but health condition is not good.

Hello, I have a question. I've only been oil pulling a few times and not consistantly but I've noticed a sequence of events that seems quite odd to me and I need some educated advice. I'm pregnant and very excited about it. I've read a few comments that say it's ok to op while I'm expecting and nothing that says I shouldn't. Anyone know any different? Also I wonder if anyone has noticed that your urine has a cloudy and slightly darker color to it since op? I've read just the opposite that some folks urine is clearer but not any thats slightly darker and cloudy. I wonder if my body is telling me that this is not good for me --right now-- at this time while carring and making a baby. Or is it saying just the opposite, that these are the toxins getting out of my body. Anyone knowledgable on this specific subject, I'm all ears? You know I'd never want to do anything to hurt our precious little one. Thanks for your help.

oil pulling is phenomenal! For years I was battling an infection in my jaw that caused me to have two root canals and endless sinus issues .It was traced to a cavitation I had in my jaw which kept me at a low level of energy for years .Eventually after try so many different therapies and antibiotics etc, a Doctor practicing oriental medication introduced oil pulling to me ,,,thank god! I started pulling and then four days into it started oozing a putrid substance from between my four upper left back teeth. I continued with the therapy believing that if the unmentionable substance continued to leave my body it could only be helping so I did it up to three times a day. On the fortyfifth day of oil pulling I experienced what was to be the last purge of necrotic tissue followed by a complete turn around in my health which was nothing short of miraculous.

One of my parents have been oil pulling every day for the past approx. 4-5 months. He had a tumor/infection in his cheek, and had a small 'hole' in his cheek. When I saw him again, I was amazed at his transformation. The 'hole' had completely gone and he had lost weight, he looked much healthier and said he felt better than he ever has in a long time. He credits it to oil pulling, amongst other natural things he is taking. I would highly recommend it to anyone. I have been OP'ing for a few days and already my teeth don't bleed whenever I brushed them or even spontaneously like they used to. I use sunflower oil and find it really good to use. Hi MEMBERS AND GUESTS

Im using the technique with sesame oil for 3 days and i think that the oil is absorbed by the skin in the mouth and invades the blood circulation. As the micro organisms dont like sesame oil the effect is a general cleansing, not a miracle, but a staged evolution to a better life style :) jmvns1@gmail.com At your service.

The site has a lot of information on OP, newspaper clippings from newspapers in India, user experiences etc., and is very active.

It would be a great resource for your readers to go to for more information.

Hope it helps your readers! Please don't hesitate to write to me if you have any questions.

I began oil pulling 10 days ago using sesame oil. I do it once a day but the past 2 days I've started doing it twice a day. Reason? There is an amazing transformation in the condition of my teeth & gums. I have had dental problems for the past 40 years- braces, teeth pulled out, then flap surgery on the entire lower & upper jaw in 6 sessions. I was told that I have a hereditary gum disease which has lead to bone loss & that all the teeth would eventually fall out. My front teeth drifted apart, there is severe gum recession, & I regularly have abcesses in my gums. The usual treatment is a heavy dose of antibiotics. Since the last abcess of two molars in my left upper jaw, in August, I have been unable to chew with the teeth on the left. I stumbled upon oil pulling & decided to try it since I had nothing to lose. The results in just 10 days are UNBELIEVABLE. The front teeeth have drifted closer & the gap between teeth has almost disapperared. My gums are stronger, feel solid, & my teeth are not lose. I keep the sesame oil bottle next to my bed, & tell myself that it is my dentist - on call 24/7, no fees, no painful surgeries. I am thrilled by the results. If there are any other benefits, they'd just be icing on the cake. For me Oil pulling is proof enough that there is a higher power out there looking out for me.

I had tried oil pulling about a year ago for several months but having no real illnesses that needed healing, I didn't really notice a big change in doing it. Needless to say, I got lazy and quit doing it. Well last year I was diagnosed with dry eyes and given restasis, which helped but not enough. I work at a computer all day and it was becoming more and more uncomfortable. Luckily for me, I ran across an article stating that OP could help dry eyes. DUH, why didn't I think of that? I have been at it again for only a week and cannot believe the difference. I actually have moisture in my eyes. I can read and I'm not reaching for my eye drops every hour. It's an answer to my prayers. Try it, I don't think you will be disappointed.

2-23-10,My first oil pulling, I'm doing a liver/gallbladder flush again this morning and decided to UP the ante. Oil Pulling with "Safflower Oil?" I'm tired of being tired. Having formerly been an athlete, this general feeling of malaise, lack of energy, lack of endurance, lack of positivity has me rethinking oil pulling threads. My mouth is totally refreshed! I've noticed a pain in an upper rear tooth, probably toxins being upset by this procedure. Not quite a pain, just an annoyance. I'm looking forward to doing this again. Can anyone tell me why "Sesame seed oil" is the preferred oil?

I once read about the "sugar cure." Swishing that about and it causes a reaction from the lymph nodes, activating the lymph nodes and causing them to dump toxins & mucous ! I believe I'm suffering from Celiac's disease, and as Mr Kellogg's has stated, "death begins in the colon"

One source I've found for Cancer Therapy http://www.health-science-spirit.com/cancer4-clean

This whole 'OP'thing makes so much sense. Why wasn't I aware of it before???

Been dabbling along the edges of alternative Therapys for decades (my compulsive/addictive behaviors have kept me from a full commitment).

Would someone respond to these questions for me...

Why Sesame seed oil (versus olive oil) is used?

Will the proceedure vary over time (as the benifits manifest)?

Is their enough datum now to give specifics to physical, emotional, & mental issues stated by commentee's over the past 2 years?

thanks ever so much. jcandjan@verizon.net

After just 30 days(1 menstrual cycle) of Oil Pulling twice a day... I can report that chronic symptoms(Pain, bleeding,Anemia, fatigue, listlessness, depression) of endometriosis & a fibroid uterus have improved by 50%. I am in complete awe of the effectiveness & expedience of this improvement. An added bonus is that colour has returned to my cheeks & i am feeling hopeful & positive that this therapy will halt the need for a hysterectomy..I have used organic Virgin coconut oil & occasionally organic Hemp oil....Thank God for earthclinic & oilpulling.org

I have large amalgam fillings that contain mercury in my molars. I would love to do oil pulling to help my gum recession. Does anyone know whether it is safe to do oil pulling if one has amalgam fillings without them becoming loose. I have had them since childhood. Also what oil would be appropriate. Is anyone doing oil pulling with amalgam fillings.

Please advice. Many Thanks

Hi ,

I have been doing OP for the last 25 days twice a day, I use sesame oil , ive noticed that my teeth have become moe yellow !!!! Can anyone please help me understand this phenomenon.?

Prad 22 months ago

Today i complete 1 month of OP , noticed the following :

1) There has been an decent elevation in my energy levels

2) My skin texture has slightly ( very slightly ) changed

3) My teeth however remains as yellow as ever (if nt more !)

4) Sleeping pattern is fine (however nt as much as desired), I wake a litle earlier and feel a little more refreshed.

So net net , not a very significant change as expected. i did OP 2 a day for the first 2 weeks and then continue to do it once a day for the next 2 weeks. I use Sesame oil.

I will continue to however do the practise as I enjoy it a lot.Not loosing much !

I would suggest trying different oils to find one that seems to work the best for you. Seseme is a popular one. So is coconut oil. I find that sunflower oil works well. It makes sense that different oils will have some different qualities. Also a lot of factors come into it, like for example time of day, brushing your teeth before or after, etc. Keep checking blogs and web sites on this for new information and experiences. Be sure the oil thins and turns white before spitting it out.

I've been reading about OP and the two things I've read that concern me and stopped me from starting is:

1) I have the silver fillings and I've read they have mercury in them so it is not advisable to do OP for fear of pulling the mercury out and causing problems, but I'm thinking wouldn't the OP take care of it? I also have a couple of root canals too.

2) I've also read that you shouldn't do OP more than two months as then it will start pulling the good minerals out of your system.

Can anyone answer these questions for me as I would like to try this especially for a very bad dry eye problem that one reviewer said it cured. Thank you so much for your help.

Interesting! My friend had asked me to try oil pulling. But I never started it. I had reservations. Maybe I will try it one day.

gayla1957 20 months ago

On May 24, I ran across the term "oil pulling" in an unrelated thread (I was on a thread about different uses for Dr. Brommer's liquid soaps), and a link was provided. Someone was writing off-topic, and the term was so strange-sounding that I clicked on the link. It was a home remedies site. I decided right then to try op'ing, and ordered organic expeller-pressed sesame and sunflower seed oils from Mountain Rose Herbs early the next morning. They arrived yesterday afternoon, so this morning I op'd using sesame oil for the first time. Until then, since Thursday morning, I have been using organic grapeseed oil (Thursday, Sat, Sun, Mon, & Tues mornings), and camelina oil (on Friday morning--it was too strong).

My gums were already in decent shape, but they immediately improved, in 2 days, to a white-pink color and very taut. My last teeth-cleaning was in 1984. They look fine, not a lot of plaque, but food would build up on them in-between brushings. I've been using a castille soap toothpaste with a bunch of essential oils added to it, and it works pretty good. It doesn't, however, compare to the oil, which immediately made my teeth slick, and no food sticks to them at all.

I guess my teeth are a little whiter, really don't know, but my mouth looks and feels overall healthier. Also, I initially felt more energetic and less hungry. To me, though, today was the first day that counted, because today is the first day of using the sesame oil.

Counter to the comments on this site about having heard of no bad reactions to op'ing, there are many posted negative reactions to extra virgin coconut oil. I haven't read of any or many side effects to the sesame or sunflower oils. Go to www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/oil_pulling.html and click on the coconut oil link to read some scary and diverse reactions to it. So I plan to stick with the suggested oils.

What an interesting and informative post, with very helpful comments. I am going to try this. However, as I don't perticularly like the idea of using refined oils in my body, I will likely start with extra-virgin coconut oil, then if I get any of the bad effects that some others found with cocnut oil, I'll switch to extra-virgin olive oil.

I'll report back. Thanks for the information.

It's hard to not be skeptical, and I'm frankly flabbergasted there are zero critical responses to your post. Also, for something making such enormous and widely-varying claims, wouldn't you think there's at least *one* scientific study of the results? If this delivers on all the claims, it would have been proven years ago. This would be extremely straightforward to test in a double-blind fashion - pocket depth after two weeks, for one thing.

The kinds of absurd statements made in its favor should set off your PseudoScience Meter (TM). "Live to be 150 years old?" Where's the proof of that? You can identify pseudo-scientific claims with expressions like "enzymes draw toxins out of the blood". Enzymes increase the rates of chemical reactions, so which reactions are you talking about? And why is the mouth so important? It seems the same effect could be made by mixing oil with saliva then rubbing it through the skin against a vein. Even Andrew Weil says it's has no proof of efficacy (http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA400499/Oil-Pulling-

You know the saying, "If sounds too good to be true," right?

I am fascinated by this blog; I've been searching online for info regarding treating gum recession. I will try this method, having read all the posts. I have a question. My mother has a similar condition, but she lost most of her teeth and has implants in the upper, yet to be finished and lower fixed bridge. Can I suggest she uses this treatment to improve her gums, or could it damage her dental implants/ dentures, bridgework? I would be most grateful for your advice. Natalia

I've doinf op with sunflower oil for one, week and I'm yeat to see the results.......I'll keep on doing it because even if does not do all the miracles, it massages the gums, qhich hold our teeth inplace, and it seems harmless, but the idia od the oil pulling toxins out of my body seems a little too good to be true, but I'll keep on doing, not bad while checking emails or watching tv good luck to all!!!

Hi. Just started this yesterday and am so excited to experience the incredible healing OP seems to offer. After reading many comments on multiple websites re: OP, esp. re: OP w/ coconut oil, a couple thoughts:

1) organic (NOT oil from crops chemically treatead);

2) extra-virgin/raw/unrefined (NOT heated or chemically processed oil)

are the ideal (for all types of oil chosen, be it sesame, sunflower, coconut, etc.) and

3) anyone using quality organic, extra-virgin/raw coconut oil and experiencing a bad reaction may be having a healing-crisis from candida (as coconut oil is great for treating candida)

I accidentally ran across a website on OP 2 months ago and was very skeptical at first. I have had numerous health related problems for 25 years since having a terrible 24-48 hour virus which resulted in sugar cravings, extreme tiredness, white junk all over my tongue, diarrhea, bad gas (and I mean BAD), forgetfullness, irritability, and on and on. I've been to doctors all over the country over the years while traveling for my job and none have been able to diagnose my problem. The only thing that seemed to help was complete removal of sugar from my diet. I even had all my lead fillings removed to no avail. I using OP twice a day, having started 8 weeks ago. At first I started with sesame oil but I broke out in itchy rashes all over my body. I switched to olive oil, the itchy rashes disappeared in one or two days. Was it the start of the OP or the sesame oil that caused the rash problem...I don't know. But I definitely can say this...that in the 8 weeks my health problems have improved dramatically over anything I have done in the last 25 years. The white junk buidup on my tongue is almost gone, even with a normal diet. The terrible gas problem has gone away. i feel much more energetic. I used to have to force myself to work out or run...now I enjoy starting the daily routine. And one other benefit I have noticed is my hair is much thicker. When I think back over the 25 years to when this virus, bacteria, or whatever got into me, that doctors can't diagnose, and the money I've spent trying to control the resulting problems, and to find out something as cheap and simple as OP giving me these improvements is amazing. I will definitely keep doing the OP and see what time brings.

(I have a restriction). I have decided to keep up the op.I will enjoy finding out what new results are ahead for me. I also enjoyed reading the blog! Good luck everyone!

Wow! I just started OPing yesterday hoping something will work for these dry eyes! Would love to get rid of that punctal plug. Tried olive oil first, and then bought some organic flax oil last night. Am off to the health food store for some sunflower oil today. Good luck everyone!

I have read that you are supposed to do it before brushing and before you eat.

Gary Barnett 13 months ago

You can brush your teeth before you pull, but you defineately need to brush right after pulling. Make sure you havent eaten for 4 hrs. before you pull. 15-20 minutes per session. Spit it out in toilet, not sink. The spit out oil wll be white in color.

good for all you people who have adopted the practice of oil pulling. did you all notice that not one person has reported anything negative about the practice. let me remind you all that this practice originated in india. india surely rocks! at the end of the day everyone has to come back to the remedies discovered by our forefathers! how can the 5000 year old wisdom go wrong. for all you young indians out there, realise this great truth. whether it is oil pulling or anything else, indians knew it way before anyone else. (the chinese are a close second). be proud to be indian-in any way you can help all those you can, share your knowledge, do all the good you can to all the people you can. happy oil pullling

Mibbi 11 months ago

First of all - OP is an ancient Indian Auyurvedic practice, and the Ukranian doctor may have made it more popular in the west but he certainly did not originate it...

OP should not be done if you have dental fillings as it can dislodge it. I have been using OP because of adult braces and it has removed debris, plaque as well as abrasions from my mouth - besides many other health benefits. I used coconut oil and it has been great. However - organic extra virgin cold pressed Coconut Oil is a waste of money for this procedure - I use instead the "Parachute" brand cooking coconut oil that I find in Indian grocery stores in the US for a few bucks. (use the kind made for cooking - not for using as hair oil). Coconut oil has monolaurin and Lauric acid in it which is essentially dissolving the outer layer (biofilm) of the bacteria, so that the bacteria and fungus etc die off. For consuming internaly I would recommend using only the extra virgin cold pressed variety of coconut oil (or else you will clog your arteries). I spit it out in my toilet pot - so that I do not clog the sink.

Another thing - do this before you have breakfast on an empty stomach - but clean out your tounge with a tounge-cleaner before doing OP. Again buy the tounge cleaner from an Indian grocery store for a few bucks...

Hi,

I have been oil pulling with virgin coconut oil for the past week. I start in the morning when I get up before breakfast, I swish it in my mouth for 20 minutes, then I spit it in a cup. Then I go rinse with half water and hydrogen peroxide. My mouth feels much fresher, and I beleive it is helping in getting rid of the bags under my eyes(probably from free radicals and toxins). I have more energy, and feel better and whiter teeth. I also use the coconut oil on my face rather than a lotion, so I think it is helping my skin (combination). I notice I am urinating more frequently and it is clearer. Besides that, I drink white tea, and Turmeric tea, because there are many benefits to them as well. I will keep oil pulling!!!

Tray 11 months ago

Been oil pulling for 5 days (It rid my front tooth of a stubborn stain on the first pull!)

But I must say, I started 2 tsp raw apple cider vinegr per day (in water) 3 weeks ago, and I honestly can tell you I've had GREAT results already! My skin is more clear, my energy is elevated, I sleep more soundly, my mood swings, anxiety and depression have been nowhere to be found lately, my spirits are upbeat, my hip pain is gone, a lipoma on my back (told to have it removed) opened up, drained and is all but gone...a drop of ACV and water in my ear caused a long time wort to fall off w/i 3 days...and I've only been doing the raw ACV (Apple cider vinegar) for 3 weeks! (Maybe 'an apple a day really DOES keep the doctor away" afterall? =o)

I recommend researching it and reading the countless testmonials! Its very encouraging and really brings hope to think that simple, old time natural remedies might bring relief when nothing else had?

I wish you all the best in your search for healing and rejuvination! =o)

I tried oil pulling several years ago for an intestinal yeast infection. That, along with a change of diet, was a slow but sure cure. Now I am starting to OP again due to an abscessed tooth. I just started this evening but on a full stomach because I had forgotten that empty is best. However, my tooth felt a little better within minutes. Not perfect but enough better that I did not take a pain reliever for it.

Mahesh Kumar 10 months ago

I head about oil pulling recently. But I know of a instance where I knew about a similar procedure in India. As every summer, When I was on vacation at my uncles village. My uncle had a big farm and live stock are kept within the compound. As we were from city, villagers would tell us many interesting local or ancient things. One day we( me , siblings and all my cousins)were told that if a person puts "pearl millets" in the mouth before brushing and keeps it for a 10 to 20 mins in mouth and spits it out, it was know to remove toxins from the body. "Pearl Millet" is a staple diet in India(many states). They had told us that tis was very simple to verify. Put some "pearl millet in the mount , hold it for 10 or 20 mins and spit it out. The chickens which are frolicking in the compound would eat them and they would die even though "pearl millet" is part of chickens regular food there so they died of the toxin that are released from the body. At that time , down side/bad was killing the chickens unnecessarily. Many village folks would do this type detoxification as "peal Millet" is available in plenty in that part of the would.

Mahesh Kumar 10 months ago

One need to have a fist full of pearl millets seeds in the mouth in order to have that detoxification effect.

Hello bobm288~

I was going to start oil pulling a few months ago but was informed that my capped teeth would leech too much metal during the process. Is this true? I would think that if it caused excessive leaching the toxic metal would be gone when I spit it out after the treatment. What do you think?

Thanks,

Jan

Jan, I have never heard of this. What you will have to do is read the skeptical sites (some above in this blog)and do what makes sense to you. If you decide to do it, give it a month or two break after a few months. Then do it for a few weeks once a year, or if it helps you a lot do it more often. Dentists now have a prescription oily mix they can give you to swish in your mouth if you have gum problems, like receding gums. Ask your dentist about it. I am currently using it.

I started oil swishing about 2 months ago. I am using Safflower Oil. I have had hypothyroidism for 15 years. My synthroid dose has only increased over the years but has remained the same for a few years now. I went to the Dr. about 3 weeks ago and had my 6 mo blood work check up. My levels were off and for the first time in years my dose was lowered. I also lost 9 pds which i believe is due to getting too much synthroid seeing that I have been the same exact weight for 10 yrs. I have been on my new dosage for about 2-3 wks and have been feeling a little restless and jumpy. I believe I my thyroid is working better and my dose will have to be lowered again. I have to have it checked in another 3 weeks. We will see. I started swishing just for basic health and removing toxins, I did not expect this. I totally believe it is helping my thyroid and overall health.. not to mention how much whiter my teeth are.

@ Matthew Cornell...uhhh, yeah, this is not a new thing. They've used OP in India for centuries. But hey, you just go ahead and stick with your "new" western medicine that cures nothing and hands out a pill for everything

i am going to try oil pulling for the first time. my symptoms are an abscessed tooth (on inside of root-- dentist says i need a root canal), adult acne(pretty sure its tied to the tooth problem) and low energy/tiredness. what type of oil do you recommend? most people on hear say sunflower but other posts have said oregano oil and tea tree for dental issues.

Karen 9 months ago

I Have fillings and a fake tooth in front..will OP hurt these? I just started yesterday with seseme oil.

leftbanker 8 months ago

I have started Op in hopes that it will strengthen my gums. I am an atheist, I don't believe in astrology or other hocus-pocus so let's just say that I have a healthy sense of skepticism regarding claims about alternative medicine. I have even more skepticism concerning traditional western medicine. I am hoping for the best, of course, and some of the claims for OP seem logical. However, I wish that people would refrain from making spurious contentions and exaggerating the effects they experienced from OP. This only clouds what may be its real benefits.

Modern medicine has little to gain if OP actually does have beneficial results so don’t expect them to apply themselves to investigating this treatment. After all, a bottle of sunflower oil costs about 1€ where I live. I started only a few days ago and will refrain from making any claims until a at least the two week mark. Good luck with your health! Ride a bike and walk a lot every day are my recommendations.

I'm 53 I have high BP, HC and TYPE II diabities. Hopeing OP will help level all of this out. I am using Safflower oil. I didn't have a lot of luck finding coconut oil.

I started Pulling about four weeks ago, and I was amazed to see immediate and recognizable results. I did see the teeth whitening happen right away. I also saw my "chin waddle" dissapearing right before my eyes. I will continue this simple but extremely effective fix.

I started oil pulling this morning using Sunflower Oil. Not organic but I thought it was better than nothing. My symptoms include bleeding gums, sensitive teeth, dry eyes (I wear contacts) and would love to see an improvement in eye sight, Also have inflamation in my left knee and a bad memory and low energy.

I did the first oil pull wrong as I did it after breakfast and could only manage it for seven minutes and accidently swollowed some.

Will try and do this twice a day - once before breakfast and once before lunch. Will keep you all informed.

This was quite informative to me; I work for a natural food store chain in the vitamin department and one of our customers during a brief conversation told me about oil pulling and suggested that I look into it.

Being an information hound / personal researcher here I am, all be it a month or so later, looking into it. It all sounds viable and I usually do a total body detox twice a year around January and June.

Well since I've been soooooo busy of late I have not done my detox this year yet so I decided to give this a go. I am using extra virgin coconut oil since I already know of some of its other wonderful benefits.

I'm on my 16th month or so of having braises, as those of you who have had them know, ones teeth tend to discolor more due to it being a challenge brushing and flossing with those wires running across the front of your teeth.

WOW! they have definitely gotten a shade n a half brighter with just two oil pulling sessions. This is very very interesting; can't wait to see what else could happen.

Thanks for listening....

I have been oil pulling for over six months now. 1 to 3x's a day. I did not notice anything to significant until I stopped about a month ago due to a move. My gums are inflamed and starting to bleed. My teeth feel as though thier is a film over them and my feet are very dry.

I will be sure to start oil pulling again first thing in the morning!

Frankie 3 months ago

Started op a few week ago but have not really kept up. Hoping it helps with sensitive and loose teeth. Will post again soon for results.

Sankar 3 months ago

oilpulling.com is the oldest and most informative website on oilpulling which I was following to see if any updates ever since 2007. I spoke to many who practice this and results seems to be vary. Still a mystery how this works.

I cannot begin to tell you all how OPing has changed my life. I used to take heavy narcotics for a miserable pain disorder. The nerve blocking meds made my teeth turn brown, my hair fall out and my fingernails became unrecognizable. All of this has changed thanks to oil pulling!

Hi today my doctor told me that my upper teeth need to be removed because of bone loss, can I start OP and not go for it

I would like to know if this could help me. I was using Abreva as a lip gloss had chapped lips and this burned my lips and also hurt my tongue. Wandering if this could help with my tongue. Thanks.

Cath65 2 months ago

I started oil pulling only 5 days ago and my gums are lovely and pink (don't think the teeth are whiter though) but although I'm slim, I've noticed each day my weight is going down significantly and have in total lost just over 2kg! I'm not starving but don't crave sweets, and drink much less coffee now. I think it's just the cellulite leaving my body...oh and no more bloating!!!! I love oil pulling (virgin, unrefined, organic coconut oil for me)

arwa 6 weeks ago

I have started oil-pulling a few months ago to cure my dry mouth (I would get up during the night to drink water). I also have too much yeast in my body.

A week ago I develop a soreness on my bottom two teeth. It emanated from the chin into the teeth.I massaged the gum with my bottom lip. Swigged with salt water and did oil-pulling. Eventually, what seemed like a clot of blood moving up against the tooth. This blood clot dissipated and I am now left with a tinge of yellow running down from the bottom lip up to the gum line.

Could it possibly be that the oil-pulling is bringing the toxins from the inside of gum for release?

I will be seeing my dentist in the new year as I want to have my front bottom teeth crowned. ( I do have a receding um-line)

Optimistic 5 weeks ago

I feel so blessed to have learned about OPing. I saw immediate benefits in my vision, my gums and teeth look great, my blood pressure is normalizing, and I feel fabulous. I have been OPing for approximately 2 weeks, twice a day, alternating with Olive Oil and Sesame Seed Oil.

Optimistic 5 weeks ago

I would like to add that most articles recommend that you drink 2 to 3 glasses of water after you finish the OPing process.

Nicole 4 weeks ago

I have been oil pulling using coconut oil for a little under a week. I felt really horrible at first which may have been from detoxing from the oil pulling or might have been from detoxing after a naturopathic treatment for my allergies (maybe both?) but now I feel awesome. I have so much energy and I was so much more focused at school today than ever before. Also my skin feels super soft and I got compliments on my hair all day today. I hope to see more awesome improvements!

Paula 4 weeks ago

Nicole - what oil are you using?

sam 3 weeks ago

After having my teeth scraped 3 times in 9 months with the last one being so agonising that I got out of the chair and refused to allow the dentist to continue, I am now resolved to use this remedy consistently.

I did start doing it about 10 months ago, but like most things I started to lapse. It's important that this becomes a daily ritual.

The teeth are definitely looking cleaner. Unfortunately on a couple of teeth I do have rather a large build up of calculus and I'm hoping that eventually this will slowly break down. If not I'm quite prepared to lose the teeth as my last visit to the dentist was so horrific that I'd rather lose my teeth than go through that experience again.

Renu 11 days ago

Hi all...Glad i saw this post...I tried this OP sometime back but in less than 5 mins i had to spit it out. I have very bad sinusitis and my nose is always blocked so i breath through my mouth most of the time...so when i do OP i will have to stop coz i'll be out of breath...Is there any way to overcome my prob??

Thanks loads..

Cath65 11 days ago

Renu - I would suggest to keep doing the oil pulling at least once or twice a day, even if it's just for those 5 minutes. That should help to unblock your sinuses little by little and gradually be able to OP for the required 15-20mins. Breathing through your mouth constantly can't be healthy so persevere with this...good luck
